THURSDAY

Talley wine dinner at Wine Cask:

Enjoy a five-course meal including seared Maine scallops and red-wine-braised short ribs paired with wines from Talley Vineyards. 6:30 p.m. 813 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, (805) 966-9463; www.winecask.com. $95.

SATURDAY

Single gourmets at Chaya Brasserie:

If you're single and looking to meet someone who likes to eat out, you might want to check out the Single Gourmet dinner at Chaya Brasserie. SUNDAY

"5 x 5" chefs collaborate:

Water Grill chef David LeFevre hosts the fourth dinner in this five-part series, which brings local chefs and one out-of-town guest chef together to tag-team the making of a meal at a given restaurant. LeFevre and L.A. chefs Michael Cimarusti of Providence, Josiah Citrin of Mélisse, Gino Angelini of Angelini Osteria and Walter Manzke, formerly of Bastide, will each make one course of a six-course meal. Joining them is guest chef Giuseppe Tentori of Boka in Chicago. To benefit the Special Olympics. Reservations after 5 p.m., 544 S. Grand St., L.A., (213) 891-0900; www.watergrill.com. $150 or $215 with wine pairing.

MONDAY

Family-style Cubano Mondays:

On Mondays at Xiomara on Melrose, share a family-style dinner plated for your table as a group. The menu includes a changing main course such as pierna de lechon asada (marinated leg of pork) as well as a greens and watercress salad, side dishes and flan. 5 to 10 p.m., 6101 Melrose Ave., L.A., (323) 461-0601; www.xiomararestaurant.com. $25 a person, no minimum number of guests.

Submit items at least two weeks before publication date. Mail to Food Section Datebook, Los Angeles Times, 202 W. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90012; or e-mail fooddatebook@latimes.com

It's November and it's officially fat-pants season. That's right.

Go ahead and cut back on dining out if you need to, but don't cut it out of your budget altogether. Southern California's restaurants need your dollars.
